What you study
A Master of Business Intelligence sits between the data and the decision. You study data warehousing, reporting and visualisation, business strategy, and the analytics behind forecasting and performance measurement. The technical content is lighter than a computing master's and the commercial content is heavier, which is the point of the qualification. Programmes usually finish with a project built on a real organisation's data.

Does the Master of Business Intelligence lead to residence in New Zealand?
Working here after you graduate
This is a degree at Level 9, so graduates can apply for a post-study work visa of up to three years and work in any job, anywhere in New Zealand. Immigration New Zealand only restricts what you may work in for non-degree qualifications at Level 7 and below, which does not apply here.
Points towards residence
The Skilled Migrant Category is a threshold of six points, not a score to maximise: once you reach six, more points earn nothing. A New Zealand master's degree is worth 6 points, the whole threshold on its own, but only where it involved at least 30 weeks of full-time study here and you already hold a bachelor's degree. Without both of those it is worth 5, and one year of skilled work in New Zealand makes up the sixth.
A qualification earned in New Zealand is worth more than the same level earned overseas, which is one of the few concrete advantages of studying here rather than at home.
The Green List
Graduates in this field commonly work in these roles, which are on Immigration New Zealand's Green List:
- Software Engineer Tier 1, Straight to Residence
- Analyst Programmer Tier 1, Straight to Residence
- Developer Programmer Tier 1, Straight to Residence
- Database Administrator Tier 1, Straight to Residence
Business intelligence analyst is not itself a Green List role. The ICT roles above are, so whether this qualification leads to a Green List job depends on the work you end up doing rather than on the degree title.

Where graduates work
Graduates work as business intelligence analysts, reporting analysts and data consultants, often inside finance, operations or strategy teams rather than IT teams. That distinction matters for residence. Business intelligence analyst is not a Green List occupation, so graduates who want that route generally move towards the engineering side of the work, where the Tier 1 ICT occupations sit.
Questions about the Master of Business Intelligence
What is the difference between business intelligence and data analytics?
Business intelligence looks backwards and sideways: what happened, where, and how the organisation is performing against its targets. Data analytics leans forward, into modelling and prediction. The tools overlap heavily. Neither job title is on the Green List, so the distinction matters for your career rather than your visa.
Is business intelligence analyst on the Green List?
No. Immigration New Zealand's Green List names Software Engineer, Analyst Programmer, Developer Programmer and Database Administrator among the ICT occupations, and business intelligence analyst is not among them. Whether a graduate reaches a Green List role depends on the work they end up doing.
Is this a business degree or a technology degree?
Both, deliberately. It is classified at Level 9 like any other master's, and Immigration New Zealand scores a qualification on its level rather than its subject, so the mix does not change what it is worth under the Skilled Migrant Category.
