Master of Data Analytics in New Zealand

What you study
A Master of Data Analytics teaches you to turn raw data into decisions. The core is statistics, database and SQL work, machine learning, and the visualisation tools businesses use to read results. Most programmes finish with an applied project or an industry placement, so you leave with work you can show an employer. Entry normally assumes a bachelor's degree, and some providers accept relevant work experience in place of one.

Does the Master of Data Analytics lead to residence in New Zealand?
Working here after you graduate
This is a degree at Level 9, so graduates can apply for a post-study work visa of up to three years and work in any job, anywhere in New Zealand. Immigration New Zealand only restricts what you may work in for non-degree qualifications at Level 7 and below, which does not apply here.
Points towards residence
The Skilled Migrant Category is a threshold of six points, not a score to maximise: once you reach six, more points earn nothing. A New Zealand master's degree is worth 6 points, the whole threshold on its own, but only where it involved at least 30 weeks of full-time study here and you already hold a bachelor's degree. Without both of those it is worth 5, and one year of skilled work in New Zealand makes up the sixth.
A qualification earned in New Zealand is worth more than the same level earned overseas, which is one of the few concrete advantages of studying here rather than at home.
The Green List
Graduates in this field commonly work in these roles, which are on Immigration New Zealand's Green List:
- Software Engineer Tier 1, Straight to Residence
- Analyst Programmer Tier 1, Straight to Residence
- Developer Programmer Tier 1, Straight to Residence
- Database Administrator Tier 1, Straight to Residence
Immigration New Zealand lists roles, not degrees. These ICT roles are on Tier 1, so what matters is the job title and duties you are actually employed under, not the name of your qualification. Database Administrator also carries a minimum pay rate.

Where graduates work
Graduates work as data analysts, business analysts and data engineers across New Zealand banking, government, health and retail. For residence the job title matters more than the degree, because the Green List names software and database occupations rather than analytics ones. Technical roles that involve building and maintaining systems fit those definitions; reporting and dashboard roles usually do not.
Questions about the Master of Data Analytics
Do I need a computing background to enrol?
Not always. Some programmes expect a quantitative bachelor's degree, and others run bridging papers for graduates from other fields. Comfort with statistics matters more at entry than programming does. Prerequisites differ more here than in most postgraduate subjects, so check the specific programme.
Is data analyst a Green List role?
No. Data Analyst does not appear on Immigration New Zealand's Green List in either tier. Software Engineer, Analyst Programmer, Developer Programmer and Database Administrator do, all on Tier 1, and those are the roles graduates in this field reach through the engineering side of the work.
How long is a Master of Data Analytics in New Zealand?
Usually one to two years full time, depending on the provider and on whether your bachelor's degree is in a related subject. For the Skilled Migrant Category it is worth 6 points only where it involved at least 30 weeks of full-time study and you already hold a bachelor's degree; otherwise it is worth 5.
