What you study
A Bachelor of Business and Information Management teaches you to sit between the business and the systems it runs on. You study management, accounting and business process alongside databases, information systems, systems analysis and project management. The degree aims at the roles where those two areas meet: specifying what a system needs to do, and making the organisation work with it. Most programmes include a systems project in the final year.

Does the Bachelor of Business and Information Management lead to residence in New Zealand?
Working here after you graduate
This is a degree at Level 7, so graduates can apply for a post-study work visa of up to three years and work in any job, anywhere in New Zealand. Immigration New Zealand only restricts what you may work in for non-degree qualifications at Level 7 and below, which does not apply here.
Points towards residence
The Skilled Migrant Category is a threshold of six points, not a score to maximise: once you reach six, more points earn nothing. A New Zealand bachelor's degree is worth 5 points, so one year of skilled work in New Zealand takes you to the 6 needed.
A qualification earned in New Zealand is worth more than the same level earned overseas, which is one of the few concrete advantages of studying here rather than at home.
The Green List
Graduates in this field commonly work in these roles, which are on Immigration New Zealand's Green List:
- Software Engineer Tier 1, Straight to Residence
- Analyst Programmer Tier 1, Straight to Residence

- Database Administrator Tier 1, Straight to Residence
This degree spans business and IT, and only the IT side leads to a Green List role. Graduates who go into business or management roles are on the Skilled Migrant Category route instead.

Where graduates work
Graduates go into business analysis, systems analysis, IT project coordination and operations roles. This is the degree where the residence route splits most sharply. Graduates who move towards the technical side can reach the Tier 1 ICT occupations on the Green List; graduates who move towards business and management roles are on the Skilled Migrant Category route instead.
Questions about the Bachelor of Business and Information Management
Which side of this degree should I lean into?
It depends on what you want the degree to do. The technical papers lead towards the four Tier 1 ICT occupations on the Green List. The business papers lead towards analyst and management roles, which are not on it. You do not have to decide in the first year, but the choice shapes which residence route is open to you.
Is business analyst on the Green List?
No. Immigration New Zealand's ICT entries on the Green List are Software Engineer, Analyst Programmer, Developer Programmer and Database Administrator. Business analyst is not among them, even where the work sits close to systems analysis.
Should I choose this or a computing degree?
If the Green List route is what you are studying for, a computing degree points at those occupations more directly. If you want the business side and are content with the Skilled Migrant Category route, this degree covers ground a pure computing qualification does not.
